Tailwind Review

Disclosure: I’m an affiliate for Tailwind and will earn a referral fee if you decided to sign up via my link. The link will enable you to schedule and publish 100 Pins for FREE! If you choose to purchase a plan in the future, you won’t pay a cent more by using my link.

When I started my first blog, I went for months without any traffic. It was tough to keep motivated, but I kept plugging away and slowly built a social following and traffic over time.  Since starting Mum Cents, I have been able to apply all of the tips and tricks I learned to date, and it has been a much different story. Mum Cents is only three weeks old at the time of this post, and I already see results for my efforts.

blog traffic

Tailwind Blog Traffic results

Since launching my blog three weeks ago with a single post, I have managed to get over 180 visitors in a single day.  As you will see in the second image, all of this traffic has come from Pinterest.  The secret to this success was using  Tailwind. This post is going to cover all the Tailwind essentials and talking about how it can help you too.

Here is what I am going to cover in today’s post:

  • What is Tailwind?
  • How does Tailwind grow your Pinterest account and following?
  • How does Tailwind optimise your Pinterest content and Profile?
  • What is Tailwind Tribes?
  • What is Tailwind Smart Loop?

What is Tailwind?

Tailwind is an online platform to manage your Pinterest and Instagram. I primarily use Tailwind for Pinterest so that this post will focus on the Pinterest features available.

When I started my craft blog, I would spend every extra minute I had manually pining content to Pinterest to try to grow my followers and get my blog seen. I also spent a considerable amount of time trying to join Pinterest Group boards, only to have no replies from the moderators. I was a small fish in a vast sea, and it did not feel like I was getting anywhere

Tailwind changed all of that for me. Using Tailwind, I was able to automate my Pinterest accounts and engage with other like-minded bloggers to share content. Having learned the benefits of Tailwind with my craft blog, I started using Tailwind about two weeks after setting up Mum Cents. As you will see in the image below, the results to my Pinterest reach have been immediate.

Pinterest Reach Growth using Tailwind

That is right, I have increased by reach by 17,886 within 21 days. Incredibly I did this with only 106 pins on my profile so far. If you want to see what sort of results others are having with Tailwind,  Tailwind publishes typical results for Tailwind Pinterest Members every year. It is important to note that Tailwind is a Pinterest Partner. There are some non-approved tools on the market that claim to do similar things, but using a non-approved Pinterest tool can have a negative impact on your search rankings over time.

How does Tailwind grow your Pinterest account and following?

Tailwind has many features that will help you achieve results. Here is a quick overview of the main ones.

Overview of Tailwind Features

While we would all love to believe that posting amazing content is all that is required to make the magic happen, that’s not exactly true. Like all search engines, Pinterest has an algorithm that determines what pins show up in searches. To grow your following and reach, someone needs to be able to find you, and that means working to the algorithm.

Tailwind takes the guesswork out posting and will help you create an optimal posting schedule for your pins based on audience engagement, virality, traffic and more. I am in Australia, but many of my readers are in North America that means that many of my optimal pinning times are in the middle of the night. Tailwind allows me to pre-schedule my pins so I can go to sleep and my audience is still getting my pins at the right time.

As a mum, the ability to bulk schedule my pins have made life a lot easier. Before Tailwind, I was trying to pin on the fly, which was not ideal for my kids or me. With Tailwind, I can set down one evening after the kids are in bed and schedule all of my pins for the coming week. Enabling me to put my phone down when I am with the kids and concentrate on them, not growing my social media account!

Tailwind Tribes Overview

The Importance of Measuring Your Pinterest Content

Your probably familiar with the Albert Einstein quote that  “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” This quote absolutely applies to the world of social media. Repining bad content over and over again is not going to get your better results. The issue is trying to figure out what is working so you can be replicate those results. Tailwind’s analytics features give you an in-depth overview of your content so you can figure out what is working and what is not.  Here are some of the features withing Tailwind analytics:

  • virality score for each pin (the number of repins / pin)
  • engagement score (The number of repins /pin/follower)
  • engagement rate (% of pins with at least one repin)
  • metrics for each of your boards

While some of these features are available within the Pinterest Analytics overview, the Tailwind system has filters that can be applied to show only pins for your content, pins to other websites, by board, and by category. These filters make it much easier to navigate, especially as your pin count grows over time.

How does Tailwind Optimise your Pinterest Content and Profile?

Optimizing your Pinterest content and profile can vastly improve your searchability within the platform. In addition to the valuable analytic insights listed above, Tailwind helps optimize your account by highlighting any gaps or issues with your profile or account. These gaps could include:

  • boards without a description
  • boards that have too few pins
  • missing profile features, such as location

When you are trying to manage 1000s of pins among heaps of boards, this extra check can make sure that your hard work is working for you!

What is Tailwind Tribes?

If you have been researching Pinterest growth, you will read all about the importance on group boards. A Pinterest group board is like any board except multiple Pinterest users come together to collaborate on content.  Group boards were once seen as the go-to way to increase your reach on Pinterest as they provided the opportunity for your content to be visible to a whole new audience. Unfortunately, many group boards to do produce the desired results. Often collaborators pin but do not repin other members’ content.  There is no accountability to make collaborators do the right things.

Tailwind Tribe Reach Example

Tailwind Tribes is like Pinterest Group Board V2.0.  Tribes provide you with a stream of high-quality content for your boards and the opportunity to have your content shared by other members.  This can help you gain a greater reach within the platform.   I started my Mum Cents Pinterest account three weeks ago, and Within a single tribe, I havebeen able to get a reach of 1M.

Another great feature of the Tribes platform is that it provides the opportunity to yourself honest. You can see how many pins you have added to the group and how much content you have shared. The tribe owner is also able to see this information and can remove any members who are not playing fair.

If you sign up for Tailwind trial, you will be able to join up to 5 Tribes. You can also buy “PowerUps” to gain access to additional tribes. I bought a PowerUp for my account this month to help get the Mum Cents word out there.

I would love to welcome you to the Mum Cents tribe so I can help share your content and help you grow your Pinterest reach.

What is Tailwind Smart Loop?

One of the newest features to Tailwind is the Smart Loop. Smart loop enables you to continually re-pin your best-performing content ensuring that it continues to drive traffic to your blog over-time. I find this feature is handy for the seasonal content from my craft blog. I no longer need to remember to start repining the Christmas content I created last year, Smart Loop will take care of it for me.    SmartLoop functionality does not come standard with Tailwind, but you can purchase a PowerUp subscription if you want to use it.

How Long Does it take to get results with Tailwind?

While the results for Mum Cents happened very quickly, that was not the case with my craft blog. It took me a bit longer during that project because I was still learning the platform and finding the right tribes for my pins. I am confident that you try Tailwind and join the Mum Cents Tribe, you too will start to see results by the time you have pined your 100 free pins.  Be sure to check out all of the features of Tailwind and make the platform work for you. Just signing up isn’t enough, you need to engage with the tools and your tribes to get your Pinterest mojo going.  Please leave a comment below if you have any questions or if you have any tips on great Tailwind Tribes to join.

Funny, but i was reading an article on how useful Pinterest is to promote blogs and get you traffic. Then your article appeared.A gift from heaven or a sign on the path to choose? I’ll certainly try it!

  3. I learned a lot from reading that and may have to try out tailwind. I started my blog months ago and have been having a hard time getting a high amount of conisistent traffic. Tailwind is something I will for sure be looking into!

    • Hi Paul, Glad you have found the information useful. If you need any help getting started with Tailwind, please let me know. As mentioned in the post it took me a bit of time to find the right tribes etc.

  4. I’m so glad I come across this! I literally signed up to pinterest this week and was wondering how to grow it. I’m an Aussie too so I like the sound of pre-scheduling my pins. I have other blogs I need to set up pinterest for too. Do you find Tailwind easy enough to manage various blogs? I’ll definitely check this out and join your tribe while I’m at it. Thanks for sharing Carolyn.

    • Hi CJ,

The prescheduling of Pins is super useful. With Pinterest’s smart feed, your first 5 pins after might UTC time are prioritised (that is 2pm in Sydney). So remember to schedule your pins first at this time over repining other’s content! See you in the Tribe.

      • Sorry CJ, I also meant to say that managing multiple accounts is super easy in Tailwind. There is a menu from the homepage the allows you to switch between profiles. I sit down once a week and do all on my pining across all my accounts.

  5. Hi Caroyln, I am amazed at the things that this Tailwand program can do for your blog. A very interesting and infomative article!I think that this is something that ill be looking into for my work.Looking forward in seeing more of those posts. Thank you for sharing!

    • Hi Amanda,

Yes Tailwind provides SEO opportunities for Pinterest. Pinterest at its core is a search engine and all of the different tools within Tailwind are aimed at making your pins as visible as possible.

  6. Hi Carolyn

Thank you this article has come at the right time across my path. Your post is very useful and will try it.
I have a Pinterest account but it is such a mish mash of different articles. I believe I will have to streamline it?
Can you advice me on how to please, or will I rather have to open a new account?

Your info was spot on and very good.
    Thank you
    Stella

    • Hi Stella,

I do not think you should start a new account, but there are a few things you can do right away to start improving your results:

      1) Make sure you link your blog to your Pinterest with a business account
      2) Ensure you add a description for your profile and your boards

within Tailwind there is a “Complete your Profile” tab on the home dashboard. If you open this tab it will walk you through all of the optimisation options including listing boards that are missing descriptions or boards without enough pins.

Happy to have a look at your profile and give you some tips if you send me a link.

Good luck, I hope that helps.

      • Thank you Carolyn,
I appreciate you time and advice!
Do you mean my Pinterest profile…. have never bothered to set one up I think, it was years ago.
I will have to go and have a look, can’t even remember my account details because I don’t log out, it is just always there … lol.
I will have to come back to you but I will rather PM you
        Thank you for your help.
        Stella

        • Hi Stella,

Yes as a first step you should get your Pinterest details organised and convert your account to a business account. There is no cost to make the switch. Please reach out via e-mail at carolyn@mumcents.com.au – I’d be happy to walk you through the process.

  7. Hi there! I am also a mum from Australia who has just started a website. How soon should I start using pinterest? I have been at it for a few weeks now but I am concerned about starting with social media too soon?
I am definitely going to mark this post and save it to come back to 🙂
Thanks for the great info, off to see what else you have that could help me!

    • Hi Nicky, Welcome to Mum Cents. I would recommend getting started with Pinterest right away. You can even start by creating boards in your niche and pin other people’s content. This will allow you to begin to gain a following so when you post your content, it gets seen. It will also give you the opportunity to see what other people in your niche are doing and see what works and what doesn’t. The Tailwind trial above is for 100 pins; it is not timed based so you can take as much time as you need to use it once you have signed up.

I also wanted to note.- this blog, and my craft blog both started getting traffic from Pinterest well before it got traffic from any other source. It’s worth the investment of time to get it started!

  8. Hello and thanks so much for sharing. Traffic is the lifeline behind an online business and if you don’t have traffic then all you have is a website or blog. This is the first time that I have heard of this program and it is so great to see how you grew your following. Must look into this program myself also.

  9. I am challenged when it comes to Pinterest, I must admit. Yes, I have boards and yes I post every article on each of my boards, but that’s the extent of it. I don’t interact, I don’t follow, I really don’t know all the ins and outs. Do you think there is hope for me?

I’m going to check this out when I get a chance and see how much it is and if I can afford it, I think I’ll sign up under you. Hopefully there is ample direction once I sign up to get me going.

    • Hi Babs,

Welcome! There is definitely hope you for you! When you signup for Tailwind there are walkthroughs and training provided for each section of the platform. Your Tailwind trial is pins based, not time-based so you can take your time and learn exactly how it all works before making any investments. I’ll PM we can link up via Pinterest. Happy to give you some feedback and work together to get you up and running.

  10. What great information! I have yet to dive into the social media aspect of promoting my blog site but this is really great info to have. I did not know something like Tailwind existed. It really seems like it will do all the legwork for you and then some. I’m definitely going to look into this…thanks!

  11. Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for explaining this tool for me. I had heard of it before but had no idea what it was, lol.
I’m not very good with my Pinterest account, yet. I pin all of my posts, but I don’t think I’m getting very many results. This tool sounds like my answer.
I’m going to check it out!
    Cheers,
    Suzanne

  12. Carolyn,

This is a very informative article. I am not yet new to Pinterest as it is not something that I have tried. Reading your article makes me want to short circuit my trip to get involved with Pinterest to promote my blog! Now I will have Tailwind to help me reach my goal even quicker!

    Thanks!

    Rachael

  13. Hi Carolyn, Informative article which has got me thinking. How much does it cost after the free 100 pins? I am running my business on a shoestring and while I have some traction I need more. You rock! Cheers

    • Its starts at only $15 per month so pretty affordable (can you also pay by the month so no big outlay at the beginning). You can always use Tribes, even without a paid membership so its always a good place to share your content, even if you decide to just stay as a free member for a bit longer.

  14. Great article on Tailwind Carolyn, admittedly I have been focusing on Instagram to push my blog, but I may move over to Pinterest to grab that extra following opportunity! Thanks for the recommendation on Tailwind too I definitely will be going to check it out! 🙂

    • There are so many channels that it is a challenge to keep up with them all. You can actually use Tailwind for Instagram too. As mentioned in the post, I don’t use it for Instagram but am looking at starting. Let me know how you go with it!
